5th Grade Programs

At Northwood Elementary we celebrate the achievements of our 5th graders as they enjoy their final year of elementary school and prepare to enter middle school!

Safety Patrol

Teacher Leader:  Linsday Oliveira

Safety Patrol is a service group whose main purpose is to serve the Northwood community by keeping pedestrians and drivers safe.  Safety patrol is open to fifth grade students who are at least 10 years old. The safety patrol student volunteers provide before and after school crossing help at the supervised crosswalks and in the parking lot. All training is provided and the program has a teacher coordinator. Training begins at the end of fourth grade and the start of fifth grade. Student volunteers will need to devote time before or after school helping pedestrians to be safe when crossing the crosswalks (regardless of weather!)  Click HERE for more information.

Nature Bridge Camp

Fifth grade students at Northwood Elementary have the opportunity to participate in an overnight camp focused on outdoor education. Our students stay onsite with parent chaperones and teachers and receive instruction from naturalists and outdoor educators. The curriculum ties into our state science and social studies standards.

The 2016-17 camp is a two night/three day experience on October 26 – 28 at NatureBridge environmental science program in the Olympic National Park.  Fifth graders from Lakeridge and Northwood will be attending NatureBridge together.

Parents of 5th graders should attend the Informational Meeting for 5th Grade Nature Bridge Camp.  For more information about the 2016-17 camp, please read the FAQ.

5th Grade Sweatshirts

The fifth grade sweatshirts are a Mercer Island tradition and a “must have” for your graduating fifth grader. Every year, the Mercer Island Elementary School PTAs collaborate to produce a fifth grade sweatshirt that has the names of all the graduating fifth grade students across the district. Not only do the fifth graders enjoy wearing the sweatshirt and signing each other’s sweatshirt, but it is also the sixth grade band uniform. So please make sure to order a sweatshirt for your fifth graders to avoid disappointed children.
