PTA Programs & Events

The Northwood PTA offers a variety of programs, activities and events for the Northwood students and families.  More detailed information is available in the event listing included in the online Northwood PTA calendar.

 

Northwood PTA Events (listed alphabetically)

“Books & Bites” at Island Books – Join us at Island Books for treats and drinks while catching up with your Northwood friends. This is a fun event that benefits our PTA and gives you a chance to get a start shop for unique gifts while helping Northwood PTA!

Fall Family Social – Meet new families, catch up with old friends and enjoy a bowl of ice cream at our first all-school social of the school year.

Fine Arts Showcase – This event is an annual fundraiser for arts programs in the schools of the Mercer Island School District. It highlights the wide variety of creative talent from our students in performing and visual arts.

International Night – Celebrate the  diversity of our community by attending International Night.  There will be booths representing various countries around the world, entertainment, festive food samples, and passports for the kids to fill out.  A high-energy, fun-filled evening!

Marketplace — Come spend an evening shopping with your kids.  Students develop a business plan, design and create a product, and market and sell the product to the whole school community.  Marketplace gives students an opportunity to learn about economics and commerce while putting their communication and math skills into action, all while having so much fun!

MLK Day of Service – Students and families will be able to make a difference in the community through a service project during the week of MLK Day.

Musical (4th and 5th Graders) – Under the direction of the music teacher, Northwood 4th and 5th graders will participate in a musical performance for the school and community.

Parent Edge Events – Parent Edge, a non-profit group that is part of the Mercer Island School District PTA, brings national speakers to Mercer Island on various topics directed at parents of kids in the K-12 age range. PTA membership provides free or reduced admission to all these events.  For more information on speakers and dates of events, please go to www.miparentedge.org.

Principal’s Coffee – An opportunity to listen and speak with Aimee Batliner-Gillette about current Northwood and school district events.  Specific times and dates will be published in The Parliament Press.

PTA Board of Directors Meetings — There shall be a minimum of one Board meeting per month.  Board meetings are open to the membership but only Board members have the right to vote.

PTA General Membership Meetings – There shall be at least three general membership meetings each year to be held at times and locations fixed by the PTA Board of Directors.  Adoption of the budget, adoption of standing rules, election of the nominating committee, report of the financial review committee, election of officers, and acceptance of any financial obligation beyond the fiscal year shall take place at general membership meetings.

Science Fun Night –  Students and parent volunteers are invited to join us for a night of science fun!  There is no preparation required and science experience is not required of the parent volunteers.  This is just a night to enjoy learning about science with your kids!

Spelling Bee – Students have the opportunity to participate in a non-competitive and competitive spelling bee.

Spring Family Social – Our last all-school social event of the year. Join us for ice cream, music and other fun activities as we get closer to ending the school year.

Summer Events – Summer socials and playdates are scheduled for each grade to help the students get to know each other before classes start in the fall.

Talent Show – Students showcase their various talents.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation – Celebrate and thank our amazing Northwood staff at our two Teacher/Staff Appreciation luncheons. Sign up to decorate our Staff Lounge, bring in homemade goodies to share, and/or help serve lunch to our staff. It is a simple and fun way for us to say “thanks” to our teachers and staff for all they do.

Walk/Bike to School Day – Northwood PTA will sponsor a Walk/Bike to School Day once in the fall and once in the spring.  Students are encouraged to walk, bike or ride their scooter or take the bus to school!  The committee will coordinate logistics, snacks, music and promote the event.

Welcome Coffee – Kick off the start of the school year by attending our Welcome Back Coffee the morning of the first day of school. The coffee provides an excellent opportunity to see the wide variety of volunteer activities available at Northwood. Sign up to help in the Library or be a room parent and learn more about how you can become involved in your child’s experience at Northwood.
